Arena Advice

Arena Surfaces
There are many arena surfaces on the market and we can discuss suitable options in more detail at the site visit, however, arenas can be divided into three main types.

1. Non-waxed Synthetic
A silica-sand base with added rubber, pvc or fibres. Requires regular maintenance and possibly irrigation if indoors or in dry weather. Horses work ‘in’ the surface rather than ‘on top’ of it.

2. Waxed Synthetic
A silica-sand base with added fibres, or possibly pvc, mixed with a Vaseline type material to hold it together. Requires very little maintenance. Horses work ‘on top’ of the surface which moves less than the non-waxed types and therefore gives a more consistent surface.

3. Wood-based Surfaces
Environmentally friendly and resistant to freezing, also a good option if planning permission is a problem. Has a limited life-span and requires regular maintenance.

Arena Maintenance
Most modern surfaces are relatively low maintenance, but here are a few tips to help you get the best out of your new arena.

  • New or ‘topped up’ arenas will take a little time to bed down properly, this usually takes a couple of months if in regular use.
  • Don’t leave jumps or lunge in the same place for prolonged periods, and always pick up droppings.
  • Regularly level the arena and check the depth of the surface in case it requires topping up.
  • Modern surfaces retain water well, but some watering may be needed. The amount depends on surface type and weather conditions.
